How to use the economic calendar
- Check high-impact events first. Rate decisions, CPI, NFP and GDP releases usually move gold, major forex pairs and indices the most.
- Compare actual with forecast. The market reacts to the surprise, not to the number itself. A large gap between actual and forecast tends to bring the biggest moves.
- Plan around the release time. Spreads often widen and price can spike in both directions in the first minutes, so many traders wait for the candle to close before acting.
- Filter by the currency you trade. Use the calendar’s filters to focus on the countries that affect your pairs, for example US data for XAUUSD and EURUSD.
